I currently live in South Jamaica, Queens, NY and i was thinking of moving to Chicago...any suggestions on which areas have an urban feel like NYC and are pretty safe to rent an apartment or a motel in?

I know you are from South Jamaica, Queens...I am a former Queens resident myself, transplanted to BK. But you would consider renting a motel room in Chicago?????? I would rethink that.

all of Chicago is overwhelmingly urban. ive talked to a few NY'ers who are surprised at how much some of the Chicago neighborhoods feel like some of the boroughs in NY. it all depends what you're looking for.

What's your idea of "affordable?" What is your monthly budget including utilities? Are you looking for neighborhoods with high-rises & courtyard buildings, or tightly-packed 3-flats, or maybe 2-flats intermixed with single-family homes? Plus, it's kind of difficult to make a solid recommendation without knowing where you'd end up working. I'd hate to recommend Hyde Park only to find out you ended up landing a job in Des Plaines.

Not all of Chicago is overwhelmingly urban. We have only 2/3rds of NYC's population density. Many of the outer neighborhoods and large chunks of the south and southwest sides have a rather suburban look and feel, with housing stock in those areas consisting overwhelmingly of single-family homes. In many outer neighborhoods, you have to look very carefully for clues as to where the city stops and where the suburbs begin.

Take a peek at Wrigleyville, several nice high-rises along the lake.

OK, that's a start, but it still doesn't tell us what your rental & utility budget is.
