Hello everyone,

I'm currently helping a buddy with his move to Chicago. He will be working in Whiting, IN and wants to live in a yuppy Chicago neighborhood. He's an average 26 y/o single guy and wants to be in a great area. He's working with a budget of $1,000/mth and can up it to $1,300 to be in a prime area. Where should he look? Zip Codes? Neighbohoods? Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

ah That area is kinda far from most yuppy areas about the best I can suggest is Hyde Park maybe bridgeport. It would allow you to make the run to the northside on the weekends.

I would suggest he live in Lakeview. Vibrant streetlife and tons of yuppies. Great restaurants, bars and shops. And he has easy access to the park/lake/running and biking trails (especially if he lives in East Lakeview). Same would be true if he lives in Lincoln Park (Lincoln Park is just just of Lakeview and both are northside Chicago neighborhoods).

His commute will be down Lake Shore Drive through Hyde Park enroute to Whiting. You can mapquest 3300 N Lake Shore Dr, Chicago, IL 60657 directions to Whiting to get commute info.

It will be a longer drive than living in Hyde Park, however, I think he might be much happier at his age living in a more exciting neighborhood.

I agree with soulful. I don't think the drive to whiting will be all that bad from LP or Lakeview. LSD to the skyway. Should be fine.

I have a good friend that works in Whiting and drives back and forth every day. If he coughs up the money and takes the skyway, he can actually make the trip there or back in about 25 minutes. It all depends on Lakeshore Drive traffic downtown.

Otherwise he just stays right on 41 from Whiting up to the south end of Lakeshore.

Thought he was a yuppy!
stick to lakeview and deal with the drive into whiting
like vlagos said the drive is decent and its a reverse commute to boot
smooth sailing down lsd ...................................
there are alternate routes if you dont want to pay the toll

I worked for two years in East Chicago, which is the city right next to Whiting. The easiest nice area to live for that region is in Hyde Park because the commute is quick and relatively painless. There is almost never a traffic jam.

Warn your friend that public transportation to Whiting is absent (except for one commuter train) and that the city enforces road speed limits as a revenue enhancing tool. If one gets caught at a freight train crossing, one is out of luck, also.

But, there is always the Whiting Pierogi Festival each summer.

Thank you all for you input! My buddy currently makes an hour commute every day here in Dallas, so anything shorter than that will put him in a good spot. He also, has a truck that he will be getting to/from work with.

You can't take trucks down Lake Shore Drive (at least I don't think so) and good luck parking that in Lakeview.
