How cheap? How close? Why do you need to be near a chain Irish pub?

Fado is a chain. The one at Grand &Clark is probably closest to the Best Western Motel at the corner of Ohio & LaSalle. Might not be the cheapest but it is closest chain type place that ain't "high end"...

Ohio House? Never been inside, but it can't possibly be very expensive. Looks straight out of "off-the-highway 1955".

Not sure if it works for you, but check out http://www.airbnb.com. You'll find plenty of options near Fado's. Cheaper and likely safer than "cheap hotel".

There's a Howard Johnson nearby. Not cheap by Howard Johnson standards, but it's cheap by downtown accommodation standards. Plus there's the novelty of having a standard motel-type structure right downtown. There's also a Hampton in right around the corner, more conventional highrise hotel form (conventional for DT Chicago anyway), which again is expensive for a Hampton but less expensive than most downtown options. HoJo will be considerably cheaper. Plus I think HoJo has free parking whereas Hampton charges somewhere on the order of $35-40 a day.

I think that I had breakfast there once, as I wandered past it. Filling, and yet very cheap. I think that it's on LaSalle, and it has that '50s neon down pat.
