Chicago has a number of coop buildings (I don't mean coop as in an alternative to condo...not the NY style coop) that might work. Here is an example of a website for a big one: http://www.noblesquarecoop.com/12bedroom.html

The other alternative is to find a low priced studio or 1 br apartment (you didn't mention your price range or desired neighborhood). You may want to check rents on craigslist.

If she will need to cover the entire rental with her SSI (and just to clarify we are talking SSI and not SSDI here) that may be challenging. I have no idea if that is the case but since you mentioned SSI thought it might be. http://www.nlihc.org/oor/oor2011/data.cfm?getmsa=on&msa=158&state=IL (broken link)

Also, the CHA has a voucher program (but I read it can be quite a hassle): http://www.thecha.org/pages/housing_...program/69.php

There is an affordable housing site listing HUD apts: http://www.hud.gov/apps/section8/res...rt=121&lang=en

Good luck to you both

This post is in the wrong forum. You should post in the Florida forums, not the Chicago one.
