That's why I don't understand how people are now stretching it to encompass swaths of downtown that weren't revitalized or in need of revitalization and were formerly just called 'Downtown.'

I've never heard anyone down there refer to themselves as living in the Cathedral District.
I hear Cathedral District occasionally in conversation, but I'd agree it's not nearly as developed into the public consciousness as other nearby areas.

Freidman owns buildings all over River North, including one on my block on Huron near Lasalle. And he usually gets the credit because he's a developer, but the owner of Flair Communications, based on Erie between Wells and Franklin since 1964, also takes credit for naming the area River North.

You're also off by at least a decade in your timing. Freidman started buying in the 1970s. By the mid-1980s, River North was already hot. Even the New York Times noticed in 1987. And the River North Association was created in about 1980.

People just refer to it as division/rush. I think its the unofficial name of the area.

Division/Rush is part of the Gold Coast.

I guess it depends by what you mean by 'hot.' I have personally seen it become a nightlife-restaurant-residential destination since the early 2000s. Excluding the cheesy nightclubs along Franklin which had been there before. In terms of gallery and commercial space, sure.

Thankfully I'm not old enough to remember it in the mid-90s. I was going by what people I know who had lived there for 30 years told me.

60610, my old neighnorhood. FWIW, I did live walking distance from the Division street bar area. You can definitely hear all of the revelry from your place if you live close as I did on Dearborn;
28th floor and could still hear it all. Granted this was in the early 90's, maybe the partying is tamer now.

Do locals refer to the area as "Rush and Division" as if implying the two streets intersect, or is it meant as a neighborhood?

We always just said "Rush Street", with the implication being the general bar area of Rush and Division.

My friend from Mt. Prospect always refers to the area as "Rush and Division." I never really understood this because Rush merges with State st. a couple blocks before Division. I guess it's a way to combine the bars/restaurants on Rush with the ones on Division.
