The murder rate through August was around 10/100,000. If things hold up it should be around 14.5/100,000 at year end.

I picked a few years to show how far we've fallen, and then thrown in the past 4 years. This is all through August.

Murder:
2000: 410
2003: 403
2008: 338
2009: 307
2010: 315
2011: 275
(-33%)

Violent Crime:
2000: 32,636
2003: 26,507
2008: 23,763
2009: 22,748
2010: 20,612
2011: 19,072
(-42%)

Property Crime:
2000: 109,899
2003: 96,684
2008: 87,860
2009: 78,628
2010: 80,017
2011: 78,425
(-29%)

To really put it in perspective, through year-end:

Murder:
1990: 950
2010: 436
(-54%)

Violent Crime:
1990: 92,000
2010: 30,393
(-67%)

Property Crime:
1990: 323,500
2010: 120,233
(-63%)

Pretty much. I took the El to a matinee at the Lyric Opera yesterday, and I was shot several times coming and going. There were just a couple of shootings in the opera house itself, though. People tend to be more civilized there. Overall, it's well worth it to enjoy world class opera. Just carry a roll of bandages with you.
