My husband is active duty Navy and will be transferring to Great Lakes; I have been offered a job working out of Schaumburg. Looking for an area that will allow both of us (relatively) easy commutes to/from work. We'll be moving from Memphis, TN, where gridlock is practically non-existent, and I have no idea how to gauge commute times.

We're looking to rent a single-family residence. He's in the Navy band and will practice his (very loud) horn at home, and shared walls or floors with neighbors just won't be practical. No kids, but we do have a dog.

We're young (twenty-somethings) and active and fun. Would like easy access to good nightlife/restaurants/bars. And obviously, we require a safe and clean community.

Any neighborhood suggestions would be greatly appreciated. What say you?

I'd suggest either Mundelein, the western section of Vernon Hills, or Buffalo Grove. These towns are all in Lake County (part of Buffalo Grove is in Cook County, but the Lake County side is nicer), and are probably about a 30-40 minute drive to Great Lakes or to Schaumburg (these towns are kind of like the halfway point I think). These towns are all excellent choices and very strategic for your commutes in my opinion. More than enough shopping & dining options available in the Vernon Hills / Lincolnshire areas (and other pockets) as well.

hahaha, Mundelein to Schaumburg commute! That's gonna be fun for all of one week at best.

Terrorizing southerners is fun, but that is cruel and unusual punishment.
