Is my apartment legal?

This is the first time i've been freaked out on something here. I thought he was describing an apartment I lived in, but i lived farther west then he, so it wasn't my place.. phew. this was when i was in my 20's and I actually thought it was cozy, i slept against the wall that faces the street, and I had a little bush covering my window. So it was cozy to me, and warm.

I also lived in an attic apartment, which was not great, it was also a home, that they converted the upstairs attic into an apartment.. The bad part was the only exit was to the landlord's apartment. My landlord also enjoyed my home cooking, he used to "just happen" to come upstairs to "fix" something - but I suspect he did that on purpose to eat some of my home made pork chops. For some reason, I was too young and too unassertive to ask him not to do that, i guess I didn't mind or something, but i should have not shared our dinner with him. he always found something like a loose doorknob to fix just as i was cooking dinner. sheesh. When we moved out, i found out he definitely was NOT up to code and he had to spend money to get another stairway put in.
