What is West Chicago like? Is it safe? And where should a young straight male look to live if his job is in West Chicago? Looking for a young vibe for sure. Will have car for work. Any feedback is much appreciated.

I suspect that a drive to Chicago would be BRUTAL day-in and day-out. Instead I would focus on the Fox Valley towns of St. Charles, Geneva and Batavia. You might also check out towns like Naperville or Warrenville. All those have, to one degree or another, a fair number of corporate type jobs which employe a number of recent college grads.

Depends on how long you want your commute to be, and the type of environment you want to be around. Oak park is right next to the west side, there is also the west loop.

The west side has some pretty rough areas, so no, it's not safe. Some areas are worse than others, like Most of Austin is a gang and crime ridden ghetto. What part of the west side will you be working in?

Ah, I do actually know, just thought he was talking about the west side of Chicago since this is the "Chicago forum" as oppose to the "Chicago Suburbs forum". Never mine, carry on...

I'll be in an outside sales role. Gas paid for, but still wouldn't want commute to be crazy. I just want to livearound a young 25-30's crowd....

From the Chicago city limits to West Chicago, its about 25 miles. From the Chicago lakefront (where the young folk typically congregate), its 30+ miles. At least 40 min commute, if not significantly longer, depending on where exactly you start. Coming back to Chicago in the afternoon will always be worse than the morning outbound commute, probably 60 minutes at the absolute best, and most likely longer.

If you are in a sales role, how often will you be at the office in West Chicago? Where is your sales territory?

Naperville is probably your best bet. There is a still a little bit of a scene in downtown Naperville for young professionals.

Just to give you an idea of the commute, I drove from the city to Oakbrook everyday and it took at 45min to an hour on average. Getting even further west to West Chicago would be very difficult long-term.

I also went to highschool in West Chicago. It's not a bad place by any means, but it is far from ideal for a single person in their mid to late 20s.
