I'm sure it's fine if you can afford it.

If you have the money it can definitely be done. I prefer the neighborhoods though and they'll have more kids -- like Lincoln Park even which is still very close to the loop.

Also, I like reading your screenname as if you're a mom of 2,012 kids. It made me laugh.

Awfully dramatic subject line for such a straightfoward question.

It comes down to money and what kind of life you want your child to have.

You tell us nothing about your financial situation, and nothing about how you want to raise your kid, so there's really nothing we can tell you other than that.

Raising a child downtown is like trading grass for concrete, i.e. playgrounds and parks, become buildings and traffic.

Ok downtown Chicago(aka the loop) is the easiest place to get to from other city neighborhoods and burbs. What else do you need? What is your budget. I personally wouldn't want to live there with a family, but it can be done(i.e. not enough green space or housing space for the money).

do you want to specifically live inside the loop or are you a visitor that only thinks of the loop when you consider "downtown" chicago living. i know plenty of people that are raising kids in bucktown, lincoln park, west loop, logan square, etc.

the reason i ask is that the loop is rather sterile. you can still have the urban feel but gain parks, grocery stores, local bars & theaters, etc. if you expand your search to outside the loop.

For someone who seemed so desperate for help, it seems MOM hasn't returned to see what help may have been offered.

There are parks and schools and many children living and being raised in what most people refer to as "Downtown." It's a lifestyle decision you'll have to make for your family. Best wishes.
