You know what I'm talking about here--the places that are filled every weekend with locals but don't have a Zagat rating.

It's in Countryside.

My favorite local place is McGann's in Western Springs. My favorite place in Chicago, although I think a lot of people know about it now, is Hot Chocolate (on Damen in Wicker Park). It's expensive but the desserts are amazing.

Sabatino's in Irving Park. Old-school Italian joint (as in, "neither the decor or the menu has been substantially updated since the 70s.) But the old-timers pack the place.

I like Sabatino's too.. my favorite now is in Printer's Row on 19th & State I believe it's called Cafe' Diablo. I believe it's the same chef that use to work at Rosebud's.. don't tell too many people b/c it's already getting crowded :-)

What type of food were you thinking?

Niche in Geneva-- best contemporary american food around. If the restaurant was in downtown chicago, they would triple the prices.

Gino's (used to be on Rush & Walton), it's undergoing renovations, so the temporary location is in Lincoln Park (on Fullerton). Terrible service, but the best deep dish pizza in the city...(it's not affiliated with Gino's East)...I went on a Friday evening and it was empty, so I guess most people don't know they have a temporary location.

I love Panes (Wellington and Sheffield)- for the best homemade bread and sandwiches and Scooters (Paulina and Belmont) for the best frozen custard (and frozen dessert) I've ever had.....

They are not totally off the beaten path, but a lot of people don't know about them.

I'm not sure Scooters qualifies. That place is nationally renowned, at least among custard buffs.
