I just accepted a job working at MOD EDIT My salary is 39,000 and I will be living alone for a few months until my fiance graduates and moves up. I have no idea where to start looking for a place but I do have some things I'm looking for.

1 bedroom preferred, close to CTA transit, and also close to grocery shopping/restaurants/bars. My cta train took about an hour to get from O'hare to Clark/Lake so I assume anything closer would take a shorter time. Not sure how things are in the early morning/evening commutes though.

Any advice on neighborhoods would be awesome, with estimate commute times if possible. I also will not have my car for possibly a couple weeks(moving from eastern Pennsylvania and it needs some tune up work).

Thanks for any help!

PS: is there an IKEA around or other source of decently priced furniture?

Try the uic campus area along taylor street for renting. Futher north neighborhoods like lakeview and lincoln park are still expensive for even a tiny studio. Taylor street near uic campus is closer to fulton street than lakeview and lincoln park. There is a jewels on roosevelt and ashland st and plenty of bars and restaurants near taylor street. Taylor street is near halsted number 8 cta bus and the blue line cta train. Also ikea is no where near the city. The only ones i know of are in Schaumburg and Bolingbrook.

Rental and utilities budget? Maximum commute time? Do you want to bring your car here, or are you doing it because you think you'll need it (which you may not)?

Why in the world would you tell us all of that personal information? Most of it isn't needed and could open yourself up for scams. Too bad you can't go back and change it now.

Jewel is a well known grocery store in Chicago.

One would think IKEA would open a store perhaps a smaller foot print someplace in the city.

I believe the schaumburg IKEA is a bit bigger than the one out in Bolingbrook.

Never? Isn't that sort of close to Bolingbrook.

Orland Park is convenient for south suburbanites. It serves as a shopping hub for the entire southland. Bolingbrook is far away and incovenient.

Maybe if you actually live IN Orland, a drive out to Bollingbrook isnt THAT bad. But if you live east of I57, it's a journey. Orland is a good half hour from my place.

Isn't Waukeagan sorta close to Shaumburg (kinda sorta not really)? So why should a Naperville resident complain about driving out to Waukegan??!!

See how that sounds..
