Attention Northwest Siders, and other cinema/movie palace/Chicago history buffs:

One of the few operating independent movie palaces left in the city is in danger. The owner of the building (which also includes a number of apartments and other store fronts) is having some personal financial issues and had to put the building up for sale, even though the theater is operating in the black and the current operator has refurbished it. Chicago Tabernacle Church has put in a bid to buy the building, and is planning on removing the marquee, making major changes to the interior to convert it into a house of worship, and pretty much ruining the ongoing rebirth of the Six Corners shopping district.

Here's the Facebook page: Save the Portage Theater | Facebook

There's also a meeting tonight at 7pm at the Portage, hosted by a number of neighborhood associations and Ald. Arena.

What?? The Patio was just "saved" and now the Portage? I hope all can be saved. I saw some films with my mom in these when I was a little girl....

Great turn-out at the rally tonight. The theater was pretty packed. There is a competing offer by another party, so there is some hope. Also, everyone, from multiple NW side alderman to all of the community organizations is against the rezoning. But it is Chicago, so you never know...mega churches have lots of money for "campaign contributions".

For those who have no idea what the Portage is: 1) the "Biograph" interior shots were filmed here for the Public Enemies movie, 2) it houses the Chicago silent film festival, 3) also houses the Chicago indie horror film fest, and 4) the theater teams up with Empty Bottle sometimes for concerts (for example, Jane Birkin's Serge Gainsbourg retrospective a few months ago was arranged by Empty Bottle and took place at the Portage).

I'm excited about the announced renovation of the Uptown, but we shouldn't have to gain one place and lose another over a small (comparatively) amount of money.

Anyway, Chicagoans please show your support for this gem of a movie palace.
