Help! I'm a 24 year old single female looking to buy a condo in Chicago. I work in the loop so would be taking public transportation. With a single income, I'm looking for a cheaper neighborhood that is safe enough for me to go for a late night/early morning run without any trouble.

Love the atmosphere of Lincoln Park, but condos are too expensive. Any neighborhoods with a similar culture/atmosphere that might be cheaper?

Thanks!

@Vlajos - I'm originally from the suburbs and spent that last few years in Milwaukee - my folks lived in the city but their knowledge of the neighborhoods really isn't applicable any more with all the changes (i.e. when my dad went to DePaul, Lincoln Park was not a great neighborhood)

@aragx6- Sorry about that, I'm looking to purchase something between $100,000 - $150,000. Of course I have no problem going cheaper!

Thanks for all your help!

I guess I would suggest renting for a year to learn about the different neighborhoods. Condo prices aren't going to skyrocket any time soon, so you probably aren't missing out on a great opportunity. I guess rates will probably creep up a bit though.

If you are really interested in buying right away, I would look in Andersonville. You can probably get a vintage 1 BD for $150K.

Locate one of the Chicago Zip Code maps online. Identify the geographhical area you might want to locate yourself in. Then wander over to the www.realtor.com website and using the search feature and after entering the various criteria, you'll see what's available in your price range. I don't think you're going to have difficulty finding something in your price range, at or close to the neighborhood you want to be and with good public transportation.

Thanks! Problem is, I'm not totally sure of the geographical area I'm looking for. My realtor is great at price range options but can't comment on neighborhood safety due to Fair Housing laws.

Any thoughts on neighborhoods that are safe but cheaper priced?

priced out of Ukie unless it's a dump (edited to add or on the far SW fringe) and there's no sense buying a dump.

I'd rent.

Priced out, only 1 unit available and it's far from desirable. I'd suggest Edgewater, RP, Avondale or Logan but i doubt a single 24 year old who isn't a hipster would dig those scenes.

cheapest places in Aville
