Well, South Lawndale is better than North Lawndale... in much the same way that getting punched in the gut with brass knuckles is better than getting stabbed in the gut with a kitchen knife.

Sorry, I'm not putting much stock in a map put on Wikipedia without the raw data or any reference to how it processed the data. I've been looking at crime maps at chicagocrime.org (RIP, everyblock sucks) and the CPD's CLEAR Map for some time now. Neither paint a particularly nice picture of South Lawndale/Little Village, even after taking population into consideration. I would refer you to CPD'S CLEAR map but the data is obviously messed up there at the moment -- for instance, claiming that in the last 365 days there have only been 4,027 violent crimes and 48 murders across the entire city, which is obviously nonsense.

Right on that page, it says "based wholly on factual data from the 2006 Chicago Police Annual Report". There is another one from 2005 with very similar statistics... Image:Chicago violent crime map.png - Wikimedia Commons

Yeah, it says where it got its data from. It still doesn't present the actual raw data or how it processed the data. Not practical for a wikipedia application, to be sure, but that's still a limitation on its reliability, especially from what I've seen with my own eyes on CLEARmap and chicagocrime.org.

I love chicagocrime.org. It tells me exactly what's going on around my mother's house (thankfully, nothing lately).

Its replacement (chicago.everyblock.com/crime) is still useful for that, but it's much more difficult to track long-term crime trends and do comparisons of crime rates across the city or in particular community areas. I miss the old version big-time.

OK, here's some violent crime stats on the "low-crime" neighborhood of South Lawndale: In the last 9 months there have been:
  • 14 murders;

  • 194 robberies, 55 with handguns;

  • 360 assaults, of which 37 were aggravated with a firearm (aka shootings or attempted shootings) and 36 were aggravated with a knife (aka stabbings or attempted stabbings);

  • 1,099 batteries, of which 668 were aggravated;

  • 235 burglaries.
I don't know what part of town you live in, but that's not exactly a low-crime neighborhood compared to where I live.

(Source: chicago.everyblock.com/crime/ -- and they actually do provide the raw data, where they got it from and describe how they process it. Compiled using the "Custom Filter" function and using "Little Village" as the filter, which everyblock considers synonymous with South Lawndale.)

I happen to live one block away from Pilsen and you are 100% full of bulloney. I walk around there all the time. If you too afraid to go to Pilsen, that is strictly a function of your own lack of "testicular virility". Maybe you should move to an old folks home and be done with it.

And Drover, you are not much better. I would suggest that you actually go to Little Village, take a walk down 26th Street, and see the place for yourself. Your bogus attempts to equate it with North Lawndale are goofy bordering on absurd.
