I'd change that to south of Grand (which is industrial anyway) and west of Western. The area around Ohio and Damen is booming with new construction almost all the way to Western. I'm there quite frequently, and have never felt unsafe. I know six people who live in that general area, and it's fine. Just a little boring.

I would agree with the Grand marker to a certain extent. It's not Ukrainian Village, but I don't think it seems particularly unsafe either. Long walk to the el though ... you'll be dependent on buses to get around.

I am interested in relocating to Chicago and have been considering the Southside and Southwest side. Why does it seem like people on this forum, only have negative things to say about southside and it being a predominately black community? I am an African-American female and do not find that productive at all. I have always been told that no matter where you go or live, there are going to be both good and bad sides of town. I am going to go on a limb here and say that Southside is predominately black? So is that why it is considered "ghetto" and "poor", not worth living in? I mean how can people want to clean up Chicago or certain neighborhoods if they don't even want to walk down the street of that neighborhood past 6pm? Just seem ridiculous and very racist to me.

Do you know anything about Auburn Gresham?

If you're going to bring your pious lectures with you, kindly consider staying in Delaware.

Of course Drover, whoever you are, coming from you, I am going to smile and wait for a normal non-biased reply. I don't know anyting about Chicago, but it appears that you are quite racist against anything that deals with African-Americans, as if we are all criminals.

This is the most attention as you will get from me on this topic.

Since you admittedly don't know anything about Chicago, you might do well to not make assumptions about it until you learn a little more about it. There's more to it than your lazy reductionist "if you don't like the south side you must be racist" nonsense. We'll do just fine without people who would bring their built-in negative assumptions to town with them.

And I'll let you guess where you can shove your assumptions about me.

Default south suburbs

To MLogan, go ahead and move there you can see for yourself. The Englewood neighborhood especially is filled with nice, friendly black people so you may want to consider moving there.

BigTed,
I think someone else said that same thing about Englewood, although I did hear posts that it is not all that great either. I think am learning alot about the different areas and would like to be in a diverse neighborhood on the southside. Still would like to see some of my own kind (black people) on a daily basis. I also hear Hyde Park is a good area and culturally diverse.

He's not being serious. Englewood is one of the most dilapidated, violent and crime-ridden neighborhoods in the city. It's also not particularly diverse at approximately 98% black (not an exaggeration).

Auburn-Gresham is a middle income community with some reasonably-priced housing stock. There are pockets of new construction going on in that area. Transportation from that area to downtown is good, also. It is served by the bus and the red line subway is nearby.

You're going to have to supply with a block (like the 9300 block of Michigan) in order for me to be more specific.
