I would say it's still dicey. West Loop really doesn't go west of Ashland but you can tell a noticeable difference if you are walking west on Randolph or Lake from Halsted as soon as you cross over Racine so I think residents tend to consider that a closer boundary. Realtors seem to claim places as far out as Western to be West Loop which is complete boulderdash. UC is perfectly fine in the day or during shows/games but that area is pretty crappy otherwise and I'd be more surprised if you said you had a landlord over there that wasn't a slum lord. It seems like they (the city? commerce board? whoever) are pushing for new retail to open on Monroe and Adams west of Damen over there but I haven't really seen anything open up aside from the expected currency exchange, laudromat, quicky mart kind of stuff and until we have another real estate bubble in say 15 or 20 years I can't see much improving in that area west of Damen or Leavitt.

The West Loop (Gate) neighborhood does not go west of the Kennedy Expressway.

I reckon so.

No, West Loop now goes all the way to Austin Blvd, a real estate salesman told me.

Next thing you know they will be claiming the Lincoln Park neighborhood stretches all the way to Hollywood and goes west to Western.

Wouldn't that be Fulton? Most of the West Loop is west of the Kennedy.

I figured you would want this: http://www.westloop.org/about/. I also rechecked the city's official map to verify.

Again, you are confusing neighborhood boundaries with "community area" boundaries.

I really don't care what WLCO claims is the west loop neighborhood. "The West Loop neighborhood is bound by Ashland Avenue on the west, the Chicago River on the east, Grand Avenue on the north and the Eisenhower Expressway on the south." http://www.westloop.org/about/
WHAT?

They are just trying to prop up their property values by using a "hot" neighborhood name.

Where is Greektown on their map? The fact that Greektown is not mentioned on their map destroys their credibility right away.

Oh FFS, not another "neighborhood boundaries" argument.

Let's go over this one more time: neighborhood boundaries are not written in stone. they change, they evolve, some neighborhoods are born, some disappear. Nearly everyone acknowledges what we call "West Loop" today, no matter how inapt that particular name, centers around the Randolph/Washington corridor at least to Racine, if not to Ashland. And that will be the case for the foreseeable future no matter how much stubborn old-timers try to fight it.

Purely subjective. All the racist white people are in places like "Wrigelyville"/Boyztown (homos, uppies etc.). So, some people wouldn't like those type areas.

I love it when homophobic people call others racist.
