I used to walk up and down north avenue in Humboldt Park and never had any issues apart from the occasional person hitting me up for money.

I did usually not wear an expensive watch or carry more than a few bucks though. Nothing like walking around on rent day with 3000 dollars in cash and looking over your shoulder until you get in the car and race over to the bank. That is still my routine the first weekend of each month.

Never take an area based on how it looks on one walk-through.

I could walk through South Chicago for an hour and not see anything dangerous. That doesn't mean crime isn't high there.

You can rationalize all you want, but an isolated area with higher crime rates isn't Wrigleyland.

Default Moving to chicago what should I do?

I am planning to move to chicago(wind city) to do residency for my Medical career .
I am also planning on working on jackson park hospital. 7531 S. Stony Island Ave.Chicago, Illinois 60649.

What are the good areas around this address to live? I don't want to live by crime area suburbs, or gangs. What is the cost of living? gas? and rent? around this area?.

YOur help will be appreciated. I come from a far away state, and I want to be prepared before making my trip.

Jackson Park Hospital is in South Shore, which has a very, very small decent patch along the lake but that patch is mostly single-family homes and not so much apartments. If you want to live within easy commuting distance and not be amongst lots of crime and gangs, then your best option is Hyde Park, which is about 2.5 miles north. Unfortunately rental demand in Hyde Park is pretty high because of the university, but rents aren't completely out of control. Habitable studios in Hyde Park start at about $700, 1-bedrooms at about $800, some including heat. I'd suggest staying north of 61st Street; it starts getting rough very quickly south of there.

It sucks. Not as sucky as the suckiest spots but its still a not very nice place to live. Odd that I only live 6 blocks or so from there...
