So I'm fairly new to the area, living in Lakeview, and thinking about applying for a job in Downers Grove. Will that be a terrible commute every day? Google maps tells me it's about a 40 minute drive but clearly that does not include traffic.... Am I crazy to consider this? Thanks!

40 mins might happen at 3 am on Sunday night. That is going to be a brutal commute.

OP, four people in a row actually in total agreement is so unusual on this forum that you might get suspicious. But don't, because the commute really is that bad.

As bad as the commute is, there are people that probably do it.

For the distance the commute could be worse -- the obvious choke points are gonna be on the Kennedy from basically Ohio until clear of the Ike merge zone, then the section of the Ike near Cicero before Austin where a lane is lost. It opens up past there and getting off at Highland is not too bad. I know folks that do carpool to save gas costs and time is faster than reverse commute via Metra... Still it can be rough, especially in bad weather / construction or when there are lanes tied up with collision. The fact is the routing of Ike allows for multiple surface street alternatives, both the obvious stuff (like Ogden, Roosevelt, Cermack) and other combinations of boulevards / arterials from Grand Ave down through about 26th St...

If you have a bicycle many of the employment centers in DG are not terribly far from Metra and there are some Pace lines that link up with the trains too.

Obviously going further west or southwest would be far longer -- DG is one of the better stops along the BNSF.

If the opportunity is good enough the job market is still soft enough that I would not recommend rejecting the possibility...
