On Western, even the sidewalk on the west side of the street is appreciably more dangerous than on the east.

I used to live not that far from there and it was just fine. In my experience the areas start to get bad south of North Ave. There are plenty of areas west of Western that are just fine. Humboldt Park is a bit dicey but not too bad. Logan Square is just fine. The area you pointed out is borderline. There is some gang activity but no open air drug markets and all the crap that comes with that. It's not an area that I think most people would be afraid in. The further north of North Ave you get the better though. I lived by Kedzie and Armitage and I really liked it.

Definitely it's more important to listen to strangers on the internet than to trust your gut by walking around an area that otherwise meets your needs. Definitely. I mean, you mother always says, "Talk to strangers," right?

I live west of Western and (gasp) south of North Avenue. I walk through the area you are targeting every day to get to the blue line. I haven't had any problems in the 4 years I've been living here. No one has ever bothered me while I was walking to/from the blue line or to/from the bars on Division. I'm a white woman, by the way.

I think you should walk around the area and see how you feel. I don't personally feel any less safe in the few blocks west of Western than I do on the few blocks east of Western between Armitage and Division. I walk in the area a lot and I'm almost always alone.
