Is is possible that either your dad, or the co-worker, confused UIC with U of C? I find that even Google gets the 2 confused.

U of C is in a very nice neighborhood surrounded by some very not-nice neighborhoods. My dad was a U of C alumni, and said he would not allow any of his daughters to go to U of C because of the surroundings.
I went to U 0f C in the early '80's - had no problems, neither did any of my friends. U of C has excellent campus security and Hyde Park is nothing like the surrounding neighborhoods.

A close friend of mine went to UC in the late 80's - I remember her story af a guy grabbing her arm and attempting to pull her down the street in broad daylight.

She got away and ran.

Could pretty much happen in a lot of places. Last summer some really drunk guy stopped to ask me if I'd seen his friend when I was walking on Division (near state..for some reason) 30 minutes later on State and Elm, the same guy was on the side of the sidewalk and he grabbed my arm. Kind of scary..caught me off guard. I pulled it away violently and my look to him told him to "**** off"

Guess I got lucky.

The area around UIC is safe.

As for the reports of a few recent muggings, don't blow them out of proportion. Any large school in an urban area is going to have some student muggings. I'm on Harvard's student alerts email list, and there are a few incidents per month happening to Harvard students, in Cambridge, but no one is freaking out about that. So keep it in perspective - your dad wouldn't stop you from going to Harvard for "safety reasons," and there's no cause to avoid UIC for safety reasons, either.
