Ah yes. I've met those people. I feel sad for them, because to me they're missing the whole point of living in such a great and diverse city.

Yes, I was being sarcastic about it being "that far west" - the point was that is seems surprising that anyone wouldn't quickly discover that area after moving here. Perhaps there is a proverbial stop sign at the western edge of "Wrigleyville" (again, blech to that name and what has happened to the area around the ballpark over the years - it's become the Viagra Triangle for the "just out of college and new to Chicago" crowd). And I agree with Aleking that Southport has become the last city stop before the burbs for the Trixies and Chads. When it started feeling faux urban (quite a long time ago) I decided to get out.

A good choice. I had a friend who lived there (on Leavitt), and whenever I visited, I was always impressed by the area's relaxed low-key feeling, while still being definitely urban. They should change the name though: hard to get more bland and boring than "North Center." It's the sort of name you'd give to a commuter rail line or an office park.

Aren't pretty much all of the desirable neighborhoods "big ten" crowds? The are big 10 bars galore in Lincoln Park. There seems to be a lot of envy and jealousy for these people in Chicago.

nah, just LV and LP...and it's not envy or jealousy, I am one myself. It's simply an identifiable demographic that follows a similar life path. Suburbs-B10 School-LV/LP-Southport-Naperville.

I've only ever known that area to be called Wrigleyville and to have that crowd. Is that a recent phenomenon?

Only if you're one of the people who thinks the only desirable neighborhoods are the ones are the ones full of the Big 10 crowds. That's a pretty limited and stale view of the city, IMO.

I wouldn't call them under-rated, but some areas I thought I'd see here are definately stuck in LP's or LV's shadow, such as Roscoe Village, Lincon Square, Ravenswood, North Center, etc etc.

Yep, that's pretty accurate. These are also the people who refer to any of their fellow middle class white people who choose to live in the city beyond age 30 (or who live in any city neighborhood that isn't LP/LV at any age) as "hipsters".

Let me set the record straight for these people that there are other people like me (who didn't come into town fresh out of graduating U of Iowa) who do everything in their power to NOT go into Lincon Park and deal with the insanity and hassles abound.
