From the Chicago Tribune:

A man was shot near the corner of Michigan Avenue and Ontario Street early this morning and four pther people were wounded by gunfire on the South and West sides overnight, police say.

The downtown shooting happened around 12:30 a.m. just off Michigan Avenue.

MOD CUT: You may only cite two sentences from any source.

This stuff happens every week along Michigan Ave.

There have been downtown gang shootings and wildings every weekend since the weather turned warm.

MOD CUT: NO politics!

This is the first time I've heard this happen...in....ever. Most of the things that have happened had nothing to do with guns (and usually are on State St anyway ;-) ). What do I know though. I only live 2 blocks from where this happened.

People seem to glorify events like this. It's all about scaring people and making things seem worse than they are. Anyone who actually lives in the city and is aware of what goes on around them knows that shootings do not happen even somewhat regularly, let alone EVERY WEEK on Michigan Avenue. In fact, it's quite rare.

I personally cannot remember a time since I've lived here in the neighborhood where there was a shooting on the "Mag Mile."

Also, if you have to take a positive away from this, it's that the gunman/gunmen didn't open fire on innocent bystanders.

12:30am isn't even really *that* late for this type of activity. I'm not one to get worried over isolated gang violence but when it starts happening in tourist areas thats a big of a concern.

This kinda of stuff happens once or twice every season, so its rare, but not unprecedented. Remember that shooting last year near the State St bridge in mid-afternoon? Definitely not good PR for Chicago, that's for sure.

I'm going to be working on N. Michigan Ave. in The Loop. Is that area safe? I looked at a map and this shooting doesn't seem too far from my office, like a half mile.
