The most desirable area is in the exclusive North suburbs where the median family income is $400,000. I would not look for city transit in those areas. The most exclusive in the south suburbs is probably Olympia Fields and maybe Hyde Park.

The most/best transit is inside Chicago. Transportation is complicated to explain with you not having a map and a basic idea of the city. Transit includes trains, EL, Metro, Metra, City bus and Pace bus, taxi, limo, and Zipcar that can be rented by the hour, and standard car rental.

Where you work (or go to school) and your budget will dictate where you live. If you rent budget is $3000 you can live anywhere. If it $600 then stay home.

There are a 1000 neighborhoods in Chicago. Tell us your budget and the block number of the business where you will work (ie: 6400 N. Western). If you want to risk coming to Chicago and you do not want to live in a seedy area or ghetto then you will need in excess of $12000 for the first year. It will cover rent, utilities, groceries, laundry/dry cleaners, and transportation.

You will receive better replies if you will provide a little more information.

Where will you be working or going to school. That would be a factoid that is important in deciding where to live.

Why, specifically, do you want to live on the South Side?

And, as others have already asked, where will your job be?

In Chicago, it's best to live in the general area where you work, if possible. The metro area is a vast place, and there's lots of traffic congestion, making for some possibly very long travel times.

Your budget (how much you can afford for housing) will also likely influence where you choose to live.

The most desirable parts of CHICAGO are usually areas such as: River North, South Loop, Gold Coast, Lincoln Park, Wicker Park, Bucktown, Lakeview, West Loop, etc. Lincix gave you suggestions for suburbs, not the city itself.

The transportation depends on where you are, but Chicago has the 2nd most utilized public transportation system in the US behind NYC. It's not as much as NYC, but it's good. There is train (8 lines) and the bus (easily over 100 routes) which can take you to a ton of places.

As far as recommendations go, it depends on your personality. What do you like doing with your time? Do you like being out? Do you like going to different restaurants? How diverse do you want your neighborhood? etc

I have to ask too, what made you single out the south side? The title of your post says that, but in your post you don't mention anything about it.

For a young lady in her late 20s with no choice other than to live on the South Side, I would recommend Hyde Park.

If you don't need to live on the South Side then follow the advice in marothisu's post, and also please provide more information.

BTW there is no suburb with a median family income of $400,000. Kenilworth comes closest.
