I am hoping to start searching for a new apartment soon especially with the CTA shutting down the red line next May. I need to get out of this area and am trying to figure out ways to search an apartment. I've heard apartment finders is good, apartment people as well. Are these good search tools? Do you know of any other ways

If you want a place that's not a house rented out, rent.com is pretty good. For everything too, the tool on the Chicago Reader is alright too, same as padmapper.

Nope. I've used apartment finders and they were awful. I've heard the same about apartment people.

They have reviews on yelp, very few of them good.

I've had good luck with a couple of sites:

Hotpads.com

Zillow.com

You can also look on real estate agents' sites like Koenig & Strey and Baird & Warner; their lists of available properties for rent often have locations that don't appear anywhere else.
