I have a feeling you will always be able to find a job almost anywhere.

Actually it is not easy finding a nursing job in an urban area like Chicago, Boston, NYC.
Especially at academic hospitals or desirable private hospitals like st joe, masonic Christ
A recent grad stated she was offered a RN position at a less areas, but turned it down. Unsure about the suburb hospitals though.

I heard of a recent strictly night shift SICU positiion at RUSH that was recently filled.

THere was an article in the suntimes that i can't open, but it basically said it was hard to find a job as a nurse in Chicag. I am only able to get the first few lines.

Nursing shortage? Not at local hospitals
March 2, 2009 By CHRISTINE S. MOYER
A severe nursing shortage is predicted in the next six to eight years when a wave of aging baby boomers is expected to crash down on hospitals nationwide. However, it seems that local hospitals are faring well for now, due in part to the ailing economy .... sorry unable to get the rest and i've google already.

Here is an older thread for potential Chicago nurses

Not to be discouraging, but make sure you have a nursing job before you move down here.

Many employers have a freeze on hiring RNs and even experienced RNs are having a difficult finding jobs. Make sure you have a job here before you relocate - the job market for nurses isn't what people seem to think. You may have to put in a lot of applications before you will get hired - best bet would be to go to the nursing spectrum website and try to make it to Chicago for the job fair. You have a chance to see a lot of employers in one day and maybe get lucky.

In a related thread I keep hearing about difficulties, but I found these job postings with a quick search (the numbers also seem pretty consistent as I've done this search a couple times over the past 1/2 year).
  • Northwestern Memorial: ~11 experienced RN positions
  • UoC hospital: ~40 experienced RN positions, ~7 non-exp RN positions
  • Children's Memorial: ~10 experienced RN positions, ~2 non-exp RN positions, plus an internship program for new RN grads every few months (latest one starts Oct 12)
  • Rush: ~20 experienced RN positions, ~8 non-exp RN positions

That said, it's certainly possible that some of these job postings are ancient, because I'm not keeping track that closely, and some of them don't post dates.

Default RN jobs in 2010

Has the RN job market improved in 2010? My girlfriend is moving to Chicago in a couple months and will be applying at a few city hospitals. Hopefully she finds a job sooner than later.
