I believe the OP is referring to the specific music of the 70's, not the pioneering spirit of FM radio at the time. I agree that more of the latter would be nice, and would lead to less of the former. It's not going to happen, though. Internet radio is now what FM radio was in the 60's and 70's. FM radio now is what AM radio was back then, except even more so.

I'm well aware of the initial implication of the thread.

My assertion was that if radio stations were "mentally" stuck in the '70s, you wouldn't find so many stations playing music from ONLY 30+ years ago. They could have done what they wanted.

But jump to today, and corporations own a VAST MAJORITY of radio and they only stick to things that are tried and true to make money. People will stop to listen to "Hotel California", it made a S------- ton of money, but would quickly turn the dial if something from Cain was playing.

It's like asking why an ice cream place has chocolate and vanilla but not soy bean and asparagus flavors.

Well if someone is unwilling to turn the dial, yes, they'll have to search other mediums such as the internet. No need to do that though, unless someone does have a stranger interest than most of the rest of us.

No, if you're unwilling to turn the dial you only get one of those four or five generic formats. Turning the dial allows you to experience the full range: a crappy Taylor Swift song, a crappy Kei$ha song, "The Joker" for the 87,000th time, muzac, or something in Spanish. Did I leave any out?

Get a satellite radio, it is infinitely better than terrestrial radio.

87.7 FM plays current and 90s alternative/modern/indie rock. It's the only station I've found so far that does.

This is exactly why I had my radio show. Even all the bands you listed have great deep cuts that are never played on the radio for no reason.
