I have a friend who already lives in Chicago who wants to get an apartment with me. I'll be visiting the city in October for about a week, and we were going to do some apartment hunting. I'm also hoping to be able to transfer my job. I work at a Home Depot. But how far ahead of time should I do these things? Do I need to find the apartment first, or try and get the job transfer first? I've never moved anywhere, so I don't know.

i'd look into the transfer first. unless you plan to go anyway without a job!

Without a job you probably can't get an apartment, so I'd definitely focus on the job first unless you have a lot of money in savings and/or a place to crash until you get on your feet.
