If you are a Chicago resident, have you been a crime victim?

I was a victim of a crime in Chicago a couple of times ... but not in the past 35 years.

I've never been mugged, but my apartment has been burglarized, and my car broken into twice. This all happened in Albany Park - my experience in Bridgeport and currently in Andersonville have been overwhelmingly pleasant.

No. But I heard someone down the street get shot/killed though. And my girlfriend's identity has been stolen like three times. (I keep telling her to switch banks but she is oddly loyal to her bank for reasons I don't understand.)

Some friends forced me to go to Bull & Bear once, which probably counts as assault in some jurisdictions.

I have a friend who got punched by some drunk oaf after a cubs game about 5 years ago, but otherwise don't know anyone who's been the vicitim of a crime except my old roommates coworker had her place robbed, but that was like 11 years ago.

I got broken into and my Macbook stolen while I was moving into an apartment in West Town. There's a sociopathic young gangbanger living in Hispanic Housing Corp. across the street who does this for a living, so I basically joined the club. I blame myself partially and I was upset for a while, but after two years with no other serious problems, I've decided that it was still worth the move.

Does a smashed car window via beer bottle when I wasn't around to witness it count as violent crime?

I was mugged in Hyde Park in the 80s, while crossing the Midway at night.

Otherwise, nothing. I did see a couple of petty crimes in action, like someone stealing a bicycle in Lakeview (he was immediately arrested).

I've never been the victim of a crime in Chicago, but my wife got pick-pocketed at the Belmont el station.
