A subway route needed because they elmiminated the 2nd ave. elevated in hopes of getting the subway in the 50ies!!

Actually, the 2nd Avenue subway was supposed to get started in 1929; we all know what happened then. The elevated train was dismantled in '40s and 2nd Avenue subway had a couple more start-ups after WWII until the financial woes of the '70s. I guess it's best to be building it now since there will be a 21st Century subway line running under 2nd Avenue which will eventually connect with lower Manhattan. The population growth in NYC is driving this as is the need for an east side line. At least New York's getting a new subway line. Chicago's getting the "Jeffrey Jump".
