Chicago recorded its 400th murder of the year last week.

Are there any solutions to gang-related gun violence?

What do you think?

Legalize drugs and put the dealers out of business.

Illegally acquired Guns are in demand because their considered a tool needed for their business.

Alternatively; gentrify the hell out of bad neighborhoods till it becomes someone else's problem. Worked for NY

Instead of prison, I think if someone is convicted of a gun-related felony (not murder) they should be sent to Afghanistan and join the armed troops there. They like guns so much -- let them use them for the sake of the country.

Seems reasonable.

Being in Afghanistan sleeping on the ground in a tent, as well as the exposure to the disciplined environment of the military would also benefit gang members.

There's only one solution to murderers. Execute them. Guns are not the problem. There are all kinds of methods for killing. A knife, a shovel, a spear, even bare hands can kill. What do you want to do, outlaw all knives and shovels, etc. Chicago has very strict gun laws, but has one of the highest murder rates in the country. Maybe they should try what has worked in Texas. Drop all the antigun ownership laws. Allow concealed carry permits for those who don't have criminal records. Make it a law that a homeowner has a right to defend his house and kill intruders.

You're a ****ing genius! Who would of thought?

Since at least 80% of homicides in chicago are gang related using illegal guns, making them legal is going to stop the killings.

Default The problem with a solution where the "punishment" probably has more upside than the current situation...

In theory, if the harsh restrictions on gun ownership that are on the books for Chicago worked, there would be no firearms related crimes committed. Through a combination of insufficient resources to effectively enforce all those restrictions and prosecutor /judges that sympathetically cut deals instead of ruthlessly handing out indictments to everyone associated with a violation there are innumerable weapons violations. Should remove all restrictions / gun laws? Would that magically take guns out of the equation?

Of course not.

It is equally ludicrous to assume that the necessary INCREASE in police manpower would be able to prevent "legalized" marijuana from being abused by minors.

Really? All top down approaches? You think NY and l.a. youth aren't gangbanging so hard because of penalty increases and freeing gun restrictions? No, for some reason gangbanging has become "lame" in these areas, kids are reallyno longer interested in repping their neighborhood, its all about pride in oneself and making money. Nowadays "gangsters" look at the previous wild and arrogant culture as a good way to hurt profits. Less violence and standing on corners = less cops and regular customers.

I feel that this rushed neighborhood changes are directly responsible, murders were down on their own as the street's mentality was heading towards discretion after 99, but now people are being forcedto live in areas they've never been too, and feuds start
