My birthday is coming up but I'll be alone, and I've been depressed, so I need some ideas for what I can do on that day. I'm in Chicago, but I'm thinking of taking the amtrak to somewhere away from the city. Not even a suburb, but like maybe a rural area or to another state. My birthday is next Monday, and I've the whole of Monday off, and my last class ends on Friday in the late morning, so I've the whole weekend, Friday, and Monday to travel. Any ideas? Thanks!

Maybe you can get a Megabus to somewhere within about 4 hours, so you're not spending all of your time traveling. I think a college town on a fall weekend might have enough going on to be fun. Megabus goes from Chicago to Ann Arbor, or Madison, or Iowa City. Then you can check out airbnb for places to stay once you arrive - or maybe you have other ideas about lodging.

Good luck. I hope you find something to do that cheers you up and feels like a good celebration.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY !

Glad your were born and I acknowledge the importance of your birth..In my family birthdays are very important..we always have a small party and cake..and we all sing and pay tribute...I love having birthdays....When I go out and about on my birthday...I tell everyone..even strangers_ "Hey it's my birthday" - You would be surprised how sweet strangers and friend will be...I would go to the club and drink for free...I would go to buy cigarettes and tell the lady about my special day...she would toss me a pack for free..

Don't be alone- let the world know it is your birthday- I tell you..............you will have a wonderful time...people love birthdays....

Find somewhere to volunteer. You will meet great caring people and have some fun and feel good about yourself by doing it. Thats what I would do anyway.

If you don't take this advice and do go out of town for your birthday, keep in mind that whereever you go will need to have usable public transit or be so small you literally can walk everywhere.

If you haven't been to St. Louis, I guess I'd recommend that. It's about 5 hours away by bus. Amtrak also goes there. If you want to go somewhere small, i'd recommend Champaign because they have a good transit system and rides for non-UIUC students are only a dollar. I wouldn't say there's a *lot* to do, but there are a few good restaurants, a couple museums, there might be a show worth seeing at the Krannertz Center, and there are, of course, tens of thousands of students to try and strike up a conversation with.

You could also get to Madison, Wisconsin, in about 4-5 hours. Or Milwaukee. They have a nice art museum.

Going east, St. Joseph, MI, or many of the other lakefront towns in western Michigan are nice getaways, although it is kind of the off-season for that. You could also go to South Bend and hang out with Notre Dame students in a smallish Indiana town - the South Shore trains go there reliably.

Madison and/or Milwaukee are the best suggestions here. Being relatively close makes for east commuting..
