I realize that there are a lot of "brokers" in Chicago offering Apartment listings. In fact, its to the point of being a bit overwhelming. I have checked out Craigslist a lot, and it seems like everything listed is from a broker, and often times seems to be a "model" unit. I have also checked out the Chicago Reader. Anyone have recomendations for some GOOD websites to search for Chicago apartments that might be offered by an Owner vs a broker? Here in Mpls we have a lot of listings for owners looking to rent their places. Thanks

Owners tend to post on Domu, Chicago Reader, Padmapper, and Craigslist. Sometimes Zillow has rentals too. Oh and I think Realtor.com is starting to list rentals.

Honestly no matter what you do it can be a chore. I worked with an agent and on my own. The agent was always legit and showed me the units that were listed on MLS or whatever.

Do *not* bother with Chicago Apartment Finders, Apartment People, etc etc. They are pretty bad. It's not all horror stories but there are plenty of them. Not worth your time.

I find it funny nobody ever mentions Rent.com here. That site is great in all honesty. It's for buildings..say 10+ units that has a management company. I found my place on that site and even got a $100 gift card for signing my lease. There are loads of places on there that you aren't going to find on craigslist, padmapper, domu, etc.

If you want to find a house being rented out, or a 3 flat, or whatever, then try padmapper and domu. If you're fine with a management company and are open to living in a building with more than just a few units, then try rent.com
