I'm wondering how much people hear French spoken in Chicago, specifically in Uptown and Edgewater with their high African immigrant populations. When I was living in Chicago I rented in Bucktown, but mentored a man from Cameroon who lived in Edgewater and spoke French. There was also a time when I was in an African owned beauty supply store in Edgewater and the cashier was speaking French on her cell phone. For those that live in Uptown and Edgewater, or other neighborhoods, do you hear French being spoken?

I simply adore French. However, I really don't hear it spoken often on the northside. I guess it depends on where you hang out.

I hear it occasionally by cab drivers, but the rest of the time I hear it mostly by financial types in the loop who I assume are European French-speaking (French, Swiss or Belgian). Sometimes I'll hear a Quebecois speaking I think.

I have a cousin who lives in Lincoln Park, and she has told me there are quite a few French people there. However, I highly doubt they are a sizable population.

About 15 years ago I heard two 30 something males speaking French on a 145 or 146 bus. It was northbound near Roscoe in Lakeview.

They seemed like consultants. Perhaps finance. Maybe Arthur Andersen..

Perhaps they did work for Ernst and Young. How chic. How fashionable. French speakers right here in Chicago. Makes me want to go out and buy Parisian clothes..
