Thinking of moving to Chicago or surrounding areas but will need to drive to Northwest Indiana twice a week (Thursday evening and Sunday morning).

Can anyone give me a realistic picture of what the traffic will be like and how long a drive I can expect?

What about when it snows? I have no experience driving in snow. How much driving time can I expect to add making this trip?

Thanks in advance.

Unfortunately, the southeast (ie Indiana border) can/ does get slammed with lake effect snow storms. Depending where your leaving from in the city and when, determines the drive.

Right now the main highway leading to Indian (the Dan Ryan) is undergoing major construction and is usually jammed. In rush hour it can take an hour to get from downtown to the state line. Snowstorms can add to this.

With the Ryan done, it's much, much better. I usually don't go that way, though. I left town a few days ago at around 7 or 8pm via Lakeshore to Stony Island to the Skyway and barely hit any traffic at all.

What does it look like to drive in the snow around here in Chicago??? Well, I'm not going to sugar coat this so I hope this answers your question.
YouTube - Chicago Blizzard on the Lake Shore Drive 2/13/07 AND this is driving down the Kennedy/Ryan on a good day.
YouTube - Taffic jam It moves, but is kinda slow.

OH and for the record, that would be LSD coming back into IL out of IN
