For $500/mo. each, it's going to be blue collar and ethnic anywhere they live in Chicago. Nothing wrong with that.

So, east of Western in Lincoln Square is full of blue-bloods wearing ascots who sail clippers in Lake Michigan?

Maybe it's just Heinrich and Brunhilda munching on some bratwurst, with an Old Style chaser..

No. My wife and I had a nice lunch at a German joint east of Western the other day; I had thuringers with fried potatoes and a house beer.

You'll find a few places in that area/north center/ravenswood for that price, but not many. My girlfriend's place was like $1150 for a 2 bedroom which was considered really good for that area..I know of maybe one or two buildings (not houses) that go for like $950/month ..but that's not including utilities. I honestly think $500/month with utilities will be hard even in Irving Park unless you find another roommate or two. My gf's friend's place in Irving Park was $500/month BEFORE utilities.

Sounds good; I've been to Edelweiss ? ( Near Wrigley) and to Chicago Brauhaus in Lincoln Square; next time, it's off to Mirabell on Addison..

I guess the whole point in retiring to the right spot is to find a location where all your physical needs will be met, and where you'll have access to all those sporting/cultural things you'd like to take in on a regular basis without having to board a plane, or take a long-distance bus/train, etc. Most retired people don't spend all of their time traveling...

Think that i got my threads crossed up here....no big deal.

Maybe it's "Edelstein"; it's a block or two down from The Cubbie Bear; quite small, easy to walk past if you aren't looking for it...

I'll have to check on this..

Found it:

Uberstein 3478 North Clark; from talking to the bartender, I'm not even sure if it;s open year-round..

That is kind of a small area to say someone wouldn't like it. Heck, if anyone can find a place west of Western in their price range then I am sure they would like it, especially with easy access to the Brown Line to get to more hip parts of the city. That is the way I would go, live in the quieter areas and commute via the El to much more active neighborhoods whenever I wanted.

Edgewater is mostly good. A few shady areas, but overall IMO is a good area and I like it. Good area for someone on a budget too who wants to live near the red line. That location is near the lake and a beach, which of course in the summer is great. Of course with the wind, it'll be cold in the winter and what not, but yeah it's fine IMO. They have some good deals in that neighborhood.
