I'm not sure if this should be in the suburbs forum or this one, but I have a job interview in Northbrook at 9am Thursday morning. I'll be coming from Steger, and going 394 to 94 all the way up. I've never driven to or through Chicago on a weekday morning, so I have no idea how to plan my commute. Google maps says it's 1 hour and 11 minutes to get there from my house, but obviously that doesn't take into account the rush hour traffic. I was thinking of maybe leaving around 7am to give myself extra time. Does that sound ok? I'd really appreciate any advice. This is a great opportunity for me and I'd hate to blow it by being late due to my ignorance of Chicago weekday traffic.

Listen to the traffic reports on Thursday AM ..One thing in your favor is this is traditionally a 'light week' for traffic, as a lot of people are off the entire week , and all the day-after-Xmas Mall madness crap happens on Wednesday .. they're calling for some possibly dicey weather .. 0700 seems a little early unless the traffic reports bear it out .. 0730 might be more realistic , and you'll probably arrive with time to spare ..

Steger to Northbrook in 1:11 sounds very optimistic. 2 hours more realistic, maybe 2.5. Have you considered the Tri-State?

Do you think that would be quicker? I'm literally 3 minutes from 394 so that seems a little more logical, but that's why I'm here cuz I have no idea which is better lol

In general if you don't need to come through Chicago, don't come through. 294 bypasses city traffic. That week things should be light but normally there are some choke points on the way north(i.e. The circle interchange and the 90/94 split are choke points plus the Kennedy likes to jam if you look at it wrong. Dan Ryan only gets jammed a bit during rush.

I would really plan for a "worst case" situation as the days after Chirstmas can still have LOTS of traffic around the malls -- while some people may have time off there are still lots of folks out shopping / traveling and together with weather issues there is potential for tie-ups...

Depending on where in Northbrook you are headed the speeds on 294 as you bypass the Loop ought to offset most of the added distance...

I would probably give myself a SOLID 2 hours for this and if there is any hint of weather related issue it would be prepared to leave considerably earlier.

I agree with the other posters on here. Drive the extra few miles, pay the tolls and take the tri-state (294) instead. There are way more lanes on 294 and it tends to move relatively quick. Going through the Bishop Ford - Dan Ryan - Kennedy - Edens combo (94 & 90/94) can easily put you through some heavy congestion & unpredictable traffic jams since you're going right through the city.
