Would it be a stupid decision for an early 20's girl to live alone in Edgewater? (Like Winthrop and Granvilleish?) Would I basically never be able to walk to the gym at night or back from the train late?

Thanks!

you will be fine

The area changed completely once the sun went down - I felt fine walking along Sheridan Rd., Broadway and Bryn Mawr, but I wouldn't recommend taking side streets after dark. Also, the tires on my car were slashed twice in the apartment parking lot. I'd say check out some apartments on Craigslist and drive by in the evening to see what the area looks like when it's dark.

Also, have you considered Andersonville? It is super cute and has tons of restaurants/shopping. It is pretty affordable and is close to Edgewater.
Usually only happens when you park in somebody else's rented space.

Edgewater is fine. As long as you stay south of Devon, really not much crime. North of Devon in Rogers Park, things go downhill a bit and you have to be careful after dark.

Hey scl, my girlfriend lived by herself in Edgewater from '10-'11. She liked it a lot and never had any safety issues. She often had to walk home a couple blocks at night, and would regularly go running early morning (still dark) along the lakefront.

For what it's worth, assuming you're still looking, she lived at 5747 N. Winthrop. She never had a problem with building management, and the building engineer was an incredibly helpful guy. It's about a block and 1/2 walk south to the Bryn Mawr Red Line station, which would be two stops closer than Granville.

Good luck!

ProgMichael- thank you SO much!! That made me feel better hearing about your gf I'm looking at a place on Winthrop closer to Granville. Yeah it may not be hip Lakeview, but it certainly is cheaper!

Winthrop and Granville is fine. Edgewater is mostly fine (a few areas are ehhh but overall it's fine). I wouldn't have any problems living in the area in many places really.

By the way, there's a cool little eatery/cafe thing right near there near Berger Park (well next to it) called Waterfront Cafe. It's in a carriage house, a little weird to find but not bad.

The only consistently dangerous part of Rogers Park is the neighborhood in and around the Howard CTA.
Edgewater is great. The 24-hour train access, the lake, the cheap rent, the diverse restaurants......I could go on. Very safe as well. Last month I think it was the 7th safest neighborhood in the city.

The area around Howard has improved some- not much- but some while the area around Morse has not really improved. I feel Howard is safer than Morse is at night. But anyplace south of Devon is safer than both of them.

Maybe some people are just crooks? On Bryn Mawr after 10:00 p.m. there are drug dealers, pimps, and gang members causing trouble. I'd look before you throw a stone, 'glass house C. Maurio'.
