There are probably situations where if you're wearing the wrong colors in the wrong neighborhood (or wrong section of the neighborhood), then you should expect a violent confrontation at some point. But I really don't see that happening on the trains or buses.

That's absolutely correct, not an exaggeration. Every single day I read in the papers that 100+ people were killed overnight in Austin. On warm nights conducive to walking, sometimes the body count goes over 1000.

I am not saying you would be killed, but how many posters on here have really traipsed around Austin on foot at midnight and are speaking from firsthand experience?

I know I haven't.

I can't speak for marothisu, but I promise if you ever met Lorieliscious or me you would laugh at yourself for having ever thought we were hipsters, unless you're one of those who applies that label to any college educated person living in the city who wasn't in a Big 10 fraternity or sorority.

Blah, I knew I shouldn't have mentioned the neighborhood I grew up in, for fear that this might degenerate into a discussion over whether or not where I grew up is tough instead of the point. The point is if you honestly believe there is any neighborhood in Chicago where your odds of being murdered are higher than not, your paranoia has taken you to some crazyland that is entirely inconsistent with reality. You don't have to be some sheltered "hipster" to know this. And, just for whatever it's worth (which is precisely nothing), I'm not a "hipster," grew up in a gang-heavy neighborhood, so yeah, I'm speaking from firsthand experience.

How many homicides in Chicago are drug/gang related vs. those that are not. Of those that are not, how many are domestic issues? After all that, how many homicides are there?

The truth is the vast majority of crime in the city is gang-related or drug-related. I'm sure domestic issues cause the next significant percentage of crime. Crimes committed against innocent bystanders would be a lot further down I believe.

It's probably no more than 10%, but likely even less.

Unprovoked, completely random murders are a myth created by newsmen to sell ad space. They don't happen.
