You are definitely black Mr. Rhetorical, I will give you that. We should all give empirical examples, 3 cities, so what?

I've lived in several areas that were considered legitimately dangerous and had high crime, but never really had any problems myself.

I lived on Division between California and Washtenaw above Best Sub about 15-16 years ago, which was just before that part of Humboldt Park started gentrifying. The sub place was open late so there was always stuff going on out in front. There was shooting on the block once or twice a week on average, but I honestly never had any issues except some ******* kids throwing eggs at my car around the corner one Halloween...just had to be aware of my surroundings and watch my back every now and then. I'm a white guy and at that time was one of the only ones for several blocks in any direction, but I had a lot of friends from the surrounding blocks and different parts of Humboldt and never was uncomfortable.

Also lived on Mozart just off Chicago Avenue for about a year around the same time. The only other white guy on the block was an old alcoholic who had lived across the street for 30 years. There was some shady stuff that went down on the corner and I remember one time the police raided the tire shop around the corner and locked down the neighborhood for a few hours. You'd hear gunshots from time to time too but my neighbors were always cool with me and I never had any issues there either. I know both of these areas are drastically different now compared with the late 90's and early 2000's.

For the most part, if you stay aware of your surroundings, carry yourself like you belong there, and stay out of other people's business, you can be fine almost anywhere. There are exceptions to that of course (I used to have friends in Englewood and I have been there for barbecues and stuff...wouldn't feel safe living there though), but generally following that rule will keep you out of trouble.

Sort of a dated name for the area. There isn't a single nightclub left, just upscale restaurants and retail. Though I'm sure there are some older wealthy guys and younger girls who hang out at Carmine's, Tavern and La Colonial looking for each other, it's hardly a scene.

The odds of wandering into Carmine's and finding an attractive single woman under thirty hanging out at the bar looking for a sugar daddy are virtually nonexistent.

Jesus. I'd be concerned if I was living on a block that had a shooting once or twice a YEAR.

Uhm.... no. Wiener's Circle isn't anywhere near there.

And who the hell is Jack O'Malley?

To clarify, it was gunshots once or twice a week on the street, not someone that actually got shot (although that happened a few times too). Not that that makes it better.

I grew up a city kid and back then I was young and didn't have hardly any money. I lived where I knew people and where I could afford, which didn't leave me with a ton of options. Definitely wouldn't choose to live in neighborhoods like that now that I can afford better, although from what I understand that area is drastically different now anyway.

Crap I meant Kevin O'Malley. I wonder if I read a RedEye that spelled it as Jack.

Man charged in Lakeview killing of Palos Park man - Chicago Tribune

These are 1 of the sad stories that death can happen at almost anytime to any body. Of course, we know this death could have been prevented. After all, he tried to chase after the robber, after he had been robbed. Otherwise he would have lived.
