I also believe there was an entire thread devoted to sweet tea before.... you can search this forum.

But yes, I think you'd like Chicago (as long as the winters aren't too much of a shock)

Why would you want to live downtown? Almost all of the city's action is in neighborhoods away from downtown.

He's probably thinking of downtown as many people not from Chicago do, as being in Chicago near the action, rather than actual downtown. Is that right?

Right. If you're moving here from somewhere else, are gay, and like to have a social life, don't live right downtown. I don't have any friend who live downtown, way too far away.

Lincoln Park
Lakeview
Uptown
Roscoe Village
Andersonville
Edgewater
Lincoln Square

Start there....craigslist.

Think $700-$800 for a nice studio
$800-$1200 for a decent 1 bedroom
$1200-$1600 for a nice 2 bedroom

Those are horribly vague, but just something to at least give you a general baseline.

You'll be fine (and I would probably guess you'll get more comments about being southern than being gay, usually people saying silly things like 'oh, I like your accent', if you do indeed have one), but you'll have to make your own tea. I know more than a few southerners who have moved here, and that is what they have resorted to in order to 'get it right'.

Personally, I don't get the sweetea thing, but I know it is a huge deal down south. It is one of those regional differences in the US that I find endearing.

Lets not leave out the southern accent too. Accents can be sexy as long as they aren't too twangy and obnoxious.

Hi, I know this thread hasn't been updated in more than two years, but I would like to add in that living downtown is quite enjoyable. I basically live in the loop and its great! We have the museums just to our south, millenium park, mich ave and state st. a few blocks away, and all my friend's offices are just a short walk in the opposite direction. Meanwhile, we are right next door to the clubs in River North. On top of that, we have both metra stations nearby if we need to get out to the burbs. Yes, the North Side has a ton of action- but don't discredit life downtown (where I have seen many, many condos and apts. leased/purchased over the last few years).

Lastly, many of the restaurants and stores in the loop have started to stay open later and on the weekends to accommodate the new residents.

Haha I should have started this on a new thread....

Hope everything worked out Todd!
