How do you all feel about the "New East Side"? This is what I've heard the Lakeshore East area is being called. It seems like a really nice area. What do the locales have to say about it? Any feelings about the Tides and the Shoreham?
Thanks!

What the heck does that make the East Side on the south side of Chicago then? The Old East Side?

I need a guidebook & map to keep track of all the neighborhood names.

Its essentially the massive Lakeshore East/ Illinois Center highrise development. All those buildings are being built on old infill/ rail yards...there used to be a 9 hole golf course on that land a while back too. Most of the streets in that area are triple level. IMO its a really odd area and I get a strange vibe walking around there. The concept was to great a skyscraper community surrounding a park, with all sorts of amenities like a school and shops self-contained. It may reach that at some point, but right now theres almost nothing around there, and its pretty devoid of any sort of street life. Part of the reason is most of those buildings are still being phased in (for example Aqua is still under construction, the Architectonica building probably wont start construction for another couple of years, and theres several more planned after that). It will be interestingly to see how it all pans out, but I find the architecture going up there really bland (with Aqua as a notable exception). However, if you're looking for highrise living and want to be a short trip to other central areas, it could be a good choice.

The proximity to Millenium/Grant Park is certainly a bonus to Lakeshore East! It has a strange sort of street-level urbanism at this point with all of the parking podiums and the multi-level streets, but I prefer it to most of south Streeterville. I'm withholding judegment until it's done and all of the promised ammenities are built, however. If I had the money and wanted to be downtown, I'd probably pick something in the Loop near the park or River, parts of River North, or northern Streeterville.

What the hell has this got to do with New East Side? You keep asking this same question in completely unrelated threads. If you you want to know about River Oaks Mall, your best bet is to start a new thread on it, preferably in the Chicago Suburbs forum.

So you don't like Streeterville, but you'd rather be up near... the northwest corner of Streeterville.
