hi folks,

my wife and are live in south loop with our little daugther. we are planing on moving somewhere on the north side in the near future...maybe in a year or two. we would prefer to buy a 2+br condo instead of a house. this wouldn't be a big deal at all wouldn't we have to think about schools for our little one.

my question is - what are some good neighborhoods to move to on the north side with a little child when considering schools? we would also like to be near public transportation (train/metra) since we both work down town.

would really appreciate your suggestions!

p.s is edgewater any good for families with little kids and when it comes to schools?

thanks!!!

I'd look at Lincoln Square/Ravenswood big time (IMO) followed by Irving Park/Old Irving Park, Edison Park, Jefferson Park, etc...depends on your budget of course. Lincoln Square/Ravenswood is probably best located out of the bunch as far as commute to the Loop goes. Great area. Metra pretty goes through all these neighborhoods as well as the El.

I think other people could clue you in more, but I believe so. I have heard some of the best elementary schools in Chicago are around Lincoln Square for example (Lincoln Square is where Mayor Emmanuel lives btw). High schools in Chicago are a different story. The best ones (Walter Payton Prep, Northside Prep (up near Lincoln Square)) are selective enrollment.

Blaine, Bell, Audubon, Coonley, Alcott, Lincoln, Waters, Nettlehorst, Peirce, Burley, (Ravenswood and Chappell seem to be really turning around) etc are all good starting places for attendance area CPS schools in northside neighborhoods.
