I am moving to the western part of Chicago, and I have been hearing that it may not be a good idea to move towards the Garfield park, and Austin area. The apartment that I was going to stay in is east of Garfield park a few blocks on California street. I will probably return to my apartment late by public transportation, so I was wondering if this would be a bad idea to stay in this area.

I do have the opportunity to stay in apartments north of the Loop in the Lincoln park area, but these places cost more money. I would like to hear any feedback. I have basically been looking for a quiet neighborhood.

I want to sugar coat this as much as possible, but that's definitely a rougher neighborhood. There's definitely a share of crime and poverty there. That's not saying "don't move here". However, if you do pick East Garfield Park, just exercise caution in your daily routine.

When you say you're looking for a quiet neighborhood, what exactly does that entail? Mostly residential and limited commercial? Limited density?

Just asking in case you're looking for a neighborhood recommendation. I think I can speak on behalf of the forum that we'd like you to a find a neighborhood that you're safe and comfortable in.

Bad idea especially if you are going to take public transportation at night.

Where will you be commuting to and from on a daily basis. That might help people find a better and still affordable area for you.

Those are dangerous areas. If you don't have a death wish stay away.

Pay the extra money for the better neighborhood, particularly under the circumstances. Not sure what your background is but there are few feelings as gutwrenchingly awful as sitting on a train or walking down the street and realizing you just ran into the wrong m*********er at 2 in the morning.

Give the troll a break. He's bored AND hairy. That's a tough combo there.
