We will probably relocate from DC area to Chicago/Suburbs next year for family reasons. I am wondering how is the job market for developers in Chicago. Is it easy to find a permanent (not a contract!) position? I am nothing very special, Bs in Cs, 3 yrs of experience, ASP.NET (C#), present employer is happy. Loving my present job, but they probably won't let me work completely remote. Dice shows quite a few jobs posted, but I never had an interview from Dice, so I don't know how informative it is. I will appreciate any input from people in the field!

There are jobs here for it, and there's a lot that are more consulting too. The most I would do is look on websites like Monster, CareerBuilder, etc for it. I want to say that ASP.NET isn't in as much demand as other stuff, but I'm sure there's some out there that does it. People are hiring (I get contacted pretty much everyday for positions unsolicited via LinkedIn - though it usually has to do with Java and web stuff, but that's more of what I specialize in), but I couldn't tell you based on your expertise how easy or hard it will be.

There are a lot of BS programmers nowadays. You will be competing with A LOT of Indians. A "not very special" C# programmer might have a hard time finding a job, but you might be lucky if you are at the right place at the right time.

Thanks guys! I guess there should be a job there for me. I am surprised that marothisu mentioned Monster and CareerBuilder. Craigslist has always worked best for me - and to my own surprise.
Maybe my present employer will want to keep me, which will give me some more time to look around. They like me a lot, but I can't ask until the decision is definitely made and suitcases packed.
