The title of the article contradicts your claim.

He thinks Chicago, along with a number of other cities, is overrated as a tourist destination. He thinks Detroit, along with a number of other cities, is underrated as a tourist destination. It doesn't mean he thinks one is better than the other.

I can say that Gary, Indiana is somewhat underrated and Paris, France is somewhat overrated, to take an extreme example. It doesn't mean that Paris sucks and Gary is awesome.

And, frankly, this thread kind of validates his criticisms. Chicago has a reputation (whether or not deserved) of being hypersensitive to criticism and a bit of a "reach" in terms of comparing itself to cities outside its league (for example, Chicagoans like to compare themselves to NYC, yet you won't see people in other cities make this comparison, while Chicagoans do not compare themselves to Detroit, but you will see people in other cities make this comparison).

One could argue that your responses are validating his general criticisms.

As an old friend if mine says "Are you blind or just stupid? Or is it both?"

He says:

"Instead, try Go to Detroit...."

"Everything's cheaper. Also: Detroiters are friendly -- Chicagoans are just polite. There's a big difference."

He is basically saying Detroit is more worth of a visit than Chicago and is comparing them. It's pretty obvious.

I agree. He lost me when he started with Buenos Aires. Suggestions other than Colorado, San Fran Berlin, Austin Vancouver, Berlin, the Caribbean & Chicago?

Yea, it's tough to take this Huffington Post thing seriously. Even if he's going for the shock vote (which I am guessing he is by the tone), saying someone should visit Detroit before Chicago is just out there. Someone should take away that guy's keyboard as another small step to eradicate idiocy on the Internets.

If anyone takes his advice and goes to Detroit over Chicago, they will be terribly disappointed. That's the part of the article that's laughable. I like many things about Detroit and wish nothing but the best for that city. It has a great and interesting history, and has more positive attributes than many people realize (thus the "underrated" comment, which I do agree with). But most tourists looking for a fun extended weekend would find it quite dull, or even somewhat frightening. It's just had too much life and vibrancy sucked out of it.

It would be only marginally better than going to a bed and breakfast in downtown Joliet. Yes, there are sports facilities and casinos, and even a fixed up theater. But after you hit the handful of highlights, then what? An architecture buff or urban blight fetishist would find Detroit endlessly fascinating if they were brave enough to go exploring, but most tourists aren't that adventurous.

No, it really doesn't.

I understand. You mean for Gringos, Chicago has Wrigelyville on a Cubs game day or Welles street on St Patrick's day evening. Yeah. One could lose sight of being in Chicago and think s/he is in a small town in eastern Europe. Detroit doesn't have that. But, the food is superior.

Detroit should have a huge sign: "Eat your last good meal now, before you enter Canada", because the food in Canada is so bad, even the Chinese food is awful.

Everybody is entitled to their own opinion as long as it doesn't contradict facts.

Wow, that sure is big of you to say, seeing as when I stated my opinions before on other things you pretty much insulted me. Pot meet kettle.
