I'm on a mission. Does anyone know or have the recipes for Alferno's pizza and Golden Bear's pancakes? Both restaurants have been gone many, many years ago, but I can still remember the taste as if it was yesterday. I would love to be able to taste them again.

Is the Golden Bear really defunct? Trip Advisor has reviews of one in Alsip, IL and there is a website with menus. It seems to only be open for breakfast and lunch (closes at 4 pm).

Default Pizza place on Jackson near Clark downtown

There was a New York style pizza place on Jackson near Clark ( there is a Musclemakers Grill there now ) which I and my co-workers loved. They had huge NY style slices, with fresh toppings for a great price. The writing was on the wall when they started selling 8 slices for $20, and did a Groupon promotion. We rushed to cash in before they closed, and got some of those slices and a Sicilian style "grandmas pizza" slice. You know it was bad when they were offering free toppings. One day we went over there, and there was a sign on the door closed, along with a notice of non-payment of rent for the year it was there. We refer to the friendly crew as the "pizza gypsYs" and wonder what town or city they landed in and what landlord they are scamming now. But their pizza was outstanding/

We used to frequent a great chinese place up near lincolnwood on Cicero - "Hi Howe", which has since closed. Owner went by the name Sam, super nice guy.

A couple of our old downtown hangouts that have since closed. "Marquette Inn" and "Mayors Row"

I miss "Allen's New American Cafe," which was previously "Harvest on Huron," located, as the former name reveals, at about 217 W Huron, literally just a block from me. If the food and service wasn't so great, I'd be embarrassed to admit a significant portion of my severance pay I received after the first time Orbitz was sold went to luxuriously delicious meals there. The chef (Al Sternweiler) closed and moved to Iowa for a while, but now owns Butcher & The Burger on Armitage just west of the 'L' station. I keep wanting to stop by, but I don't eat a lot of burgers and just haven't made it over there yet.

I was a little shocked on my last trip in:
Pat's Pizza near Belmont near the Vic Theatre. Best thin crust in town.
Leona's....like Leona's I thought was expanding and doing the multiple location thing
There was an Italian place that was awesome right next to the fire station on Clark...it was like in a house almost, but it was definitely a restaurant....a good one too.

I didn't have a lot of time to explore old haunts and was obviously on the north side, but that was surprising.
