Complicated Car Registration (Chicago, Brooklyn: to buy, DMV, live in)

Hey all, I posted this in the NYC forum, but was advised to try it here, too.

So I am about to move to Chicago and had to buy a car for the move. This happened last weekend in Jersey. My wife and I live in Brooklyn and we are each from other states (and naturally, did not get NY licenses).

I am leaving in 2 weeks, which will be just before our temporary NJ plate expires. We are just finding out (literally today) that we need to either get a NY license to have our registration/plates sent over, or go back and re-do the paperwork. Getting a license doesn't seem to make sense, because apparently we will first get an interim license before getting a real license, which wouldn't show up until we are already in Chicago.

Going to re-do the paperwork might be the only realistic option, but even then, I don't know what option is best. We could try and register for our new address (which we have), or we could try and register at an address listed on our licenses.

Shot in the dark here, but does anyone know what we should do?

Put it on a car hauler and meet it out in Chicago, then go to the DMV and get new plates.
