Hey everyone,

My husband and I are officially starting the home buying process, and are really excited to look for a small bungalow/starter home in the city. We'll probably be looking at a few condo units too, mainly in Roscoe Village/West Lakeview (our ideal neighborhood), but we are very interested in finding a single-family, which we can't afford in that area (budget: about 400,000; looking for a small, 2-3 bedroom starter). We plan to be in the home for about 5-7 years, and kids are not going to be arriving for at least 2-3, so schools are not an issue. Anyway, we want to stay within the city limits: can you think of any neighborhoods were missing from our list? Right now, I'm hoping against hope we can find a fixer-upper in North Center/Irving, but we'll also be looking in Jefferson Park (is that area safe?? Like, safe enough that a woman would feel ok walking back from the Blue Line at night?), maybe Edison Park (this area is beautiful, but I'm worried about transit here - we share one car between the two of us). Other that Jeff/Edison/Irving, are there any other areas you'd recommend? Can anyone living in those areas chime in as to safety/appeal? If you live there, have you noticed young couples/young families moving in, or are these people all buying condos closer to downtown?

Thanks!

Maybe Portage Park -- it is can't hold a candle to Roscoe Village for hipness / dining / entertainment but you will get more for your money if you must live inside Chicago...

Right, someone yesterday posted two really nice bungalow's that are in Portage Park. The prices were both under $400K and neither appeared to need much work.
