You would not believe that the stores in chicago near downtown, do not have black eyed peas in a can.. I wanted to make Hoppin John and I called a lot of major stores, they dont have it. Where can you get it on the north side? I dont think one store knew what i was talking about because i asked for Hoppin John beans, and then realized its called black eyes peas, still the person should have known what that was and did not. Are there any ethnic groceries on the north side that carry such items? I dont wand the dried beans either.

I know a friend bought some last year at the Dominicks on Madison and Halsted ( she made Hoppin' John for News Years) ..I think they were Trappey's Brand I'm betting the Wal*Mart at Monroe and Jefferson has them as well .. they have a large selection of canned, ethnic , regional stuff .. I've seen canned Boiled Peanuts there .

I make Hoppin' John a couple of times a year. Never with canned peas, though. I always soak my peas overnight. You can buy the beans and after boiling for a while use them right away, thoiugh. It's an expedited method the recipe for which is in the bag of the beans. As far as canned beans are concerned, I see them at Food For Less which has no stores Downtown. I always toss in some hocks or neck bones. :-)

I am in SW Tennessee...but all of our Walmarts & most of the Dollar General Stores carry black-eyed peas & even a basic canned version of Hoppin'John that Margaret Holmes puts out. I add crumbled bacon & a little rice. You might check the dried bean/pea/rice sections in stores & do from scratch.

I see them in the stores all the time. People here might not know them as hoppin john beans but rather as black eyed peas.
